Lieutenant James Comstock served in the Connecticut Militia during the Revolutionary War, and died at Fort Griswold.

The obelisk is inscribed that he died at the Battle of Fort Griswold September 6, 1783, conflicting with the date of the battle which occurred September 6, 1781, (two years earlier and the latter part of the Revolutionary War). Aged 75, according to the stone, which seems to be another error.

Son of Daniel and Elizabeth Prentice Comstock; married Hannah Allen [History of Montville, Connecticut pp 136, 138].
