Mr. Karl Summey Sawyer , Sr., 85, of Charlotte, died Sunday, December 16, 2001 at Presbyterian Wesley Care Center.

The funeral service is at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, in the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albemarle Road, with the Reverend Dr. J.A. Harbinson of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park following the funeral service. Visitation is from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, at Wilson Chapel. The family will also receive friends at the home of Pierce Sawyer , 5208 Carriage Drive Circle.

Mr. Sawyer was a native of Gaston County, born on September 21, 1916, in Dallas, NC. He was the son of the late Professor George Lippard Sawyer and Mrs. Eula Summey Sawyer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Lucille McGinnis Sawyer. He served 39 1/2 years in education as a teacher, coach and administrator in schools in Union County, NC, and Kings Mountain, NC, the Blue Ridge School for Boys in Hendersonville, NC and the old Central High School and Garinger High School in Charlotte. He retired in 1979 as Chairman of the Math Department at Garinger High School. He formerly held membership in a number of educational organizations. He was a World War II US Army Air Forces veteran, serving 13 months stateside and 27 months in the European Theater of Operations as a weather observer and also as an upper air specialist. He received four battle stars and various campaign ribbons.

Mr. Sawyer graduated from Boone (NC) High School. He was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, now Appalachian State University, in 1937 with a BS cum laude. He received his MA in Mathematics, also from Appalachian State Teachers College, in 1951. While an undergraduate at ASTC he played four years on the varsity tennis team. He has belonged to various civic and veterans organizations. Currently, he was a member of American Legion Post #1981 in Raleigh, NC.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his sons, Karl S. Sawyer , Jr. and his wife, Pam, and G. Pierce Sawyer and his wife, Faith, all of Charlotte; his daughters, Mrs. Kay Cowan and her husband, Ben, of Mint Hill and Mrs. Jeanne Matlock and her husband, Albert, of Weddington; eight grandsons; and five granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204, or to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
