Robert Battey, of Rome, Georgia, was born November 26, 1828,
in Richmond county, that State. He is a son of Cephas
Battey, a native of Pern, Clinton county, New York, and Mary
A. daughter of George Magruder, of Richmond county, Ga. His
ancestors, who were English , settled at Providence, Rhode
Island. He was educated at Augusta, Georgia, and at
Phillips; Academny, Andover, Massachusetts, and studied
medicine at Booth's Laboratory, Philadelphia, the
Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the University of
Pennsylvania, and Jefferson Medical College, graduating from
the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, March 17, 1856, and
from Jefferson Medical College, March 07, 1857. He has
resided in Rome, Georgia, from December, 1847, to the
present time, excepting the interval from November, 1872, to
October, 1875, during which he resided temporarily at
Atlanta, Ga., as Professor of Obstecrics in the Atlanta
Medical College, and editor of the Atlanta Medical and
Surgical Journal... [This is an extensive biography.]

Dr. Batey has been established in the town of his present
residence devoting his attention to gynecological practice.
He is one of the most noted surgeons of the South and his
skill as an operator has gained for him a world wide
reputation. He was married December 20, 1849, to Martha B.
Smith, at Rome, Georgia, who has borne him fourteen
children.

Dr. Robert Battey was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Science in Philadelphia. He married Martha Baldwin Smith on Dec. 20, 1849 in Rome, Georgia, and they had 13 children.
According to the history of Floyd Co., pages 137 & 365 in 1861 & 1863, Dr. Robert Battey was a Civil War Surgeon in the Confederate Army. In 1861, Dr. Battey was appointed Surgeon of the 18th Georgia. He also served in the 19th Georgia Regiment, 19th Georgia Infantry, and Cherokee Artillery.
