Obituary for Isodene (Thomas) Smith
MRS. ISODENE SMITH, 93, DIES;
WAS AMONG OLDEST RESIDENTS
Mrs. Isodene Smith, 93, one of Columbiana county's oldest residents and descendant of one of the community's pioneer families, died Saturday at 2 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward F. Kelly at 622 Blackmore st.
Mrs. Smith, who spent most of her life in Middleton township, had been making her home with her daughter since last May. Her health had been good until last Thursday when she was stricken. Her death was attributed to infirmities of old age.
Mrs. Smith was a great-granddaughter of Enos Thomas, one of Columbiana county's first justices of the peace, who is said to have officiated at the marriage of Jesse Smith and Susannah Shaw, whose license was the first ever recorded in Columbiana county. A surveyor by profession, he was one of the three men who plotted the county about the time that Ohio became a member of the union early in 1800.
She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Thomas, and was born in Middleton township Aug. 8, 1848. She clearly remembered of when, as a girl of 15, of the excitement which existed in Columbiana county on a Sunday morning in late July, 1863, when word came that the Confederate raider, General John Morgan and his command of cavalrymen, were approaching. She also recalled the terrible drought which existed in 1853 when flour prices jumped to $25 a barrel.
Mrs. Smith, who was Isodene Thomas, was married to William Smith, a Civil war veteran, on Dec. 31, 1868. They spent most of their lifetime in Middleton township, where Mr. Smith was a farmer. Mr. Smith died in 1924.
Mrs. Smith became the mother of 10 children. Her descendants include 43 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, a total of 136 descendants.
She became a member of the Mt. Zion Methodist church in Middleton township when a girl and was active in church activities most of her lifetime.
Surviving are four sons, A. Claud Smith of East Liverpool, Demoin T. Smith of Lisbon, Everett E. Smith of Carrollton and Edward R. Smith of Negley; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Green of Negley, Mrs. Mary S. Thompson of Wellsville and Mrs. Kelly. Two sons, Harlan T. Smith and Oren T. Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Green, are dead.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Zion church. Rev. C. Ralph Strobel, pastor of the Negley Methodist church, will serve. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
The body was taken to the Warrick funeral home in Columbiana and was returned to the Kelly home today. Friends may call at the Kelly home any time before the funeral.
NOTE: There is one mistake in this obituary. Isodene is a granddaughter, not a great-grandaughter of Enos Thomas.
