Obituary for Alvah Claude Smith
COUNTY APIARY INSPECTOR DIES
Claude Smith's Rites To Be Held Saturday
Claude A. Smith, local representative for the Standard Oil Co. for many years and Columbiana County apiary inspector, died Thursday at 2 p.m. in his home, 313 Grant St., following a two-year illness. He was 81.
Smith was employed by the Standard Oil Co. for about 40 years retiring in 1930. He saw the delivery system of the company grow from a single horse-drawn wagon hauling kerosene to a fleet of large tank trucks supplying gasoline and lubricating oils.
He was a bee specialist and was called upon frequently to collect stray swarms. He was named apiary specialist by the county commissioners, a post he held for many years following his retirement.
Smith was an elder and an usher in the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Sunday School at the Calvary Methodist Church. He was a member of East Liverpool Lodge 681, Masons; Keramos Council 95, Royal and Select Masons; East Liverpool Chapter 100, Royal Arch Masons; Odd Fellows Lodge 379 and Ceramic Rebekah Lodge 286.
He was married to the former Miss Margaret Alma Grove on Sept. 27, 1899.
He leaves his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Erick Calhoun and Mrs. Margaret Dresser of Cleveland; three brothers, Everett W. Smith of Carrollton, Demoine Smith of Elkton, and E. R. Smith of Fredericktown; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie J. Kelly of East Liverpool, and Mrs. Mary S. Thompson of Rock Camp, and two grandchildren.
Rites will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. M. Rudolph Miller, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
The Masonic lodge will conduct a service at 6:45 and the Ceramic Rebekah Lodge at 7:30 tonight in the funeral home, where friends may call tonight.
NOTE: The name of the one brother, Everett W. Smith, is wrong. His name is actually Everard U. Smith.
