Rev. Jacob Sanford dies; Rites Saturday
Rev. Jacob Sanford, aged 80 years, died at his home, 210 N. Granger St., Granville, on Wednesday, Dec. 4th.
He was born near Reading, England and came to America in 1871 when eleven years old.
He was educated in Doane Academy Denison University and Colgate Theological Seminary where he graduated in June 1893. He was ordained in Sandy Creek, New York a few weeks previous to his graduation, having completed nine years of struggle to secure an education, working his way through school and caring for his family.
Mr. Sanford held pastorates in New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio. In 1906 he became associated with the Ohio Anti-Sallon League as District Superintendent in Toledo and later as Assistant State Superintendent in Columbus, serving faithfully for about twenty-five years.
He has had poor health for several years, but was not confined to his room until Saturday.
He is survived by his widow, L'Berta Sanford and four children, Hugh of Adams, New York, Mrs. Edna Benjamin of Jefferson, Ohio, Mrs. Sadie Bridge of Elyria and Mrs. Eloise Hard of Mount Gilead, Ohio, all of whom were by his side except the son who was delayed by illness at home and will arrive today.
There are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held in Rhoades chapel, Granville Baptist church on Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Horace Houf of Athens, a former pastor and longtime friend will conduct the services assisted by Rev. Chester Oxley, the present pastor.
The body will remain at Evans Funeral Home where friends may call until taken to the church at 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment in Maple Grove cemetery, Granville, Ohio.
