He graduated from Neodesha High School and attended a business college in Joplin, Missouri.
He entered the US Army during World War II. Following the war, he worked as a welder in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon. He also built barges for the Alaskan Pipeline. Following his retirement, he returned to Fredonia in 1989.
He was a member of the Boilermaker's Union.
