Elizabeth Rohling Beckman, age 87, of Tuscumbia, died Sunday Aug. 28, 2005.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005 at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at Our Lady of the Shoals Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Father Patrick Tierney will officiate.
Mrs. Beckman was born Mary Elizabeth Rohling in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on Dec. 29, 1917. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and later Lawrence County High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1936.
Following high school, she was employed variously as a seamstress, bookkeeper, and in government loan offices, providing assistance to needy farmers during the Great Depression. She remained in Lawrenceburg through the 1940s, caring for her aging parents.
In 1950, she married Dr. Paul Beckman, of Sheffield, Ala. Later they moved to Tuscumbia and together raised five children. Additionally, she assisted her husband in his optometry practice in Sheffield.
Mrs. Beckman was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith, and an active member of Our Lady of the Shoals Parish. She and her husband, Paul, delivered Meals on Wheels to the homebound. They also regularly took Holy Communion to those unable to attend Mass. She was a member of the Altar Society and served multiple terms as an officer of the organization.
She truly loved people, and her bright smile often brought joy to cheer someone in need.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul H. Beckman; her parents, Joseph and Dena Rohling of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; sisters, Louise Rohling, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Sister Mary Grace Rohling, R.S.M., of Nashville, Tenn., and Sister Mary Agnella Rohling, O.P. of Columbus, Ohio; and her brothers, Robert Rohling, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and William Rohling, of Nashville, Tenn.
Mrs. Beckman was the loving and devoted mother of five children who survive her, James Paul Beckman and wife, Linda, of Mobile, Ala., Juliana Louise Powell and husband, Elmo, of Center Star, Ala., Michael Joseph Beckman and wife, Miriam, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Dr. Robert Fred Beckman and wife, Lynn, of St. Louis, Mo., and John Bernard Beckman and wife, Alston, of Easley, S.C.
She is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher Michael Beckman, Andrew James Beckman and Daniel Robert Beckman of Winston-Salem, Jordan Elizabeth Beckman and Caroline Alston Beckman of Easley, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Sister Mary Vincent Beckman, O.S.B., of Cullman, Ala., Margaret Beckman Geise of Clark, S.D., Magdalena Rohling of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Carl Thompson, Kenneth Metcalf, Henry Long, Albert Kersteins, Christopher Beckman and Andrew Beckman.
