Paul is second child and eldest son of seven children. He was baptized 14 May 1916 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sheffield, Alabama. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Sheffield High School. He earned a Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. He married Mary Elizabeth Rohling Sept. 5, 1950 at Sacred Heart Church, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and is the father of five children (four sons, one daughter). He is an optometrist by profession.

The funeral for Dr. Paul Henry Beckman, 1200 E. Fifth St., will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Shoals Catholic Church, Tuscumbia, with the Rev. Bernard Patterson, O.S.B., officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia, directing.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, with rosary at 7:30 p.m.

He died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1992 at Humana Hospital, Muscle Shoals.

He was a native of Sheffield and a lifelong resident of the Shoals area. He was a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry and practiced optometry in Sheffield for over 43 years. He was a member of the Alabama and American Optometric Associations, veteran of World War II, and served over 3 1/2 years in Honolulu as an optical inspector. He was a charter member of the Sheffield Lions Club and remained an active member with perfect attendance from 1951 until his death. The extensive charity services he provided through the Lions Club received widespread regional recognition as well as recognition from Lions International. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Shoals Catholic Church, the choir, eucharistic ministry, parish council, president of the Golden Years Club and other committees. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, held third and fourth degrees in the Knights of Columbus, and was a past grand knight. He held numerous other offices as well.

Survivors include wife, Elizabeth Rohling Beckman, Tuscumbia; sons, James P. Beckman, Mobile, Michael J. Beckman, Windsor, Conn., Robert F. Beckman, M.D., St. Louis, Mo., John B. Beckman, Anderson, S.C.; daughter Juliana L. Beckman, Florence; sisters, Cornelia Beckman, O.S.B., Cullman, Mary Vincent Beckman, O.S.B., Mrs. Margaret Geise, Clark, S.D.; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Bearers will be Curtis Beard, Dale Thornton, Edmund Gussmus, Carl Thompson, Bob Carter, and Henry Long.

Honorary bearers will be members of the Sheffield Lions Club and fourth degree members of the Knights of Columbus.
