Chester L. "Pete" Crum, 79, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at the Tippah County Hospital. He was born June 19, 1929, to Ola and Betty Childs Crum. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Ripley Masonic Lodge No. 47, the Scottish Rite, and American Legion Post 81. He was called into active duty in September 1950 as a member of Company "C" 114th Engr. Mississippi Army National Guard, during the Korean conflict. After coming home he served another six years with the Mississippi National Guard and then joined the U.S. Army Reserve out of Tupelo, where he finished his 30 years, leaving with the rank of Warrant Officer W4. He was devoted to law enforcement and served as constable, deputy sheriff, sheriff, Ripley Police Department, police chief and chief investigator.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jack Bennett and the Rev. Randy Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Rooker Crum; one son, Chester L. Crum Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one daughter, Jan Graham (Bobby) of Tupelo; two stepsons, Stanley Dickinson (Judy) and Mike Dickinson, both of Ripley; two sisters, Mildred Thomas of Ripley and Hazel Garrison of Blue Mountain; and two grandchildren, Allison Estabrooks (Dave) of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Nathan Crum (Rochele) of 7 Studio City, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ola and Betty Childs Crum.

Pallbearers will be Jerrell Lewellen, Audrey Box, Jimmy Hopper, Roscoe Storey, Jerry Conley and H.P. Crum.

Honorary pallbearers will be the J.P. Shackelford Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
