Sergeant Gardiner, 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, suddenly died while drilling D Company recruits on the Westwood, Beverley. He lived at Anne's Terrace, Clifton Street, Hull, but was billeted at the Assembly Rooms, Beverley. The cause of death was given as heart failure. Press reports gave his age as 62, but the General Register Office has it as having been 58.

As a Guardsman he had served in the Egyptian Campaign and the South African War.
