Born in Baao, Camarines Sur, Philippines to Mateo Alfonso Barlin and Francisca Imperial.
The 1st Filipino Bishop in the Roman Catholic Church.
Ordained: 19 Sep 1875
Appointed: 14 Dec 1905
Ordained Bishop: 29 Jun 1906
Principal Consecrator:
Archbishop Ambrose Agius, O.S.B.
Principal Co-Consecrators:
Archbishop Jeremiah James Harty
Bishop Frederick Zadok Rooker
A priest for 34.0 years. A bishop for 3.2 years.
Jorge Barlin was ordained priest when he was 28 years old, at a time when the Catholic Church, headed by Spanish friars, was persecuting Filipino priests. His rise to that exalted ecclesiastical post was not only a personal triumph but also the fulfillment as well of every Filipino Catholic priest's aspiration. It, too, was a triumph of the Filipino people, of a race that had been considered inferior for over 300 years by a regime which had itself brought Catholicism into the country.
Death came to Bishop Barlin in Rome. He was interred in that holy city. Several attempts to bring his remains to the Philippines in later years proved futile.
