Richard L. Tobias, age 81 of Beavercreek, passed away suddenly, on Friday, August 29, 2014 following a brief battle with the only enemy brave enough to challenge him twice, cancer.
He was born in Dayton on December 13, 1932 to
Parents:
PLamar and Norma (Pfoutz) Tobias, both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan D. Davidson in 2008. At age 9, his parents founded the Tobias Funeral Home and Dick immediately went to work serving the Dayton community. This was a position he would occupy for the rest of his life except for four years spent in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Besides being a life-long funeral director, he was a life-long Marine.
He was awarded the Purple Heart twice for wounds received in action, having been shot and struck by artillery fire on separate occasions. He received the award from his personal hero, Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC Commandant. When Gen. Puller asked Dick where he wanted to be stationed following his recuperation, Dick answered he would like to be placed back with his company to continue to fight. Gen. Puller's response was enthusiastic, approving and unfit to print in this publication.
Upon his return to civilian life, Dick resumed his work with his family. Following his father's example, he married a nursing student from Miami Valley Hospital and started his own family.
He and his wife, Marilyn, celebrated 57 years of marriage on August 25 of this year. Along with his wife, he is survived by two children: daughter, Kimberly A. Tobias-Davidson (Joe Rauch) and son, Kevin R. Tobias and wife Jennifer. Three grandchildren also survive him: Nicholas M. Davidson and wife Amy (who are expecting his first great grandson, Nathan) and Audrey R. and Aiden R. Tobias. Also surviving are two brothers, David B. Tobias and Dan K. Tobias and wife Mary Beth as well as several nieces and nephews. He held memberships in the Ohio Funeral Director's Association and the Grand Lodge of Ohio for more than fifty years.
He was an ardent supporter of local police and firefighters and drove his wife and kids up the wall listening to his police radio constantly. He loved to hunt, fish and drink beer with both his American and Canadian buddies. For more than fifty years, he vacationed at LaCloche Lake in Massey, Ontario, spending five months of each year there following his "retirement" in 1982.
His family will receive friends from 3-7 pm at the Tobias Funeral Home-Beavercreek Chapel, 3970 Dayton-Xenia Rd. on Sunday, September 7, 2014. Funeral services will be 11 am Monday, September 8, 2014 at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at Beaver Cemetery. Rev. Bobbie Predmore and Rev. Brooks Heck will officiate services.
