"LANDLORD OF WOLFE TAVERN IS DEAD
Daniel H. Fowle Was Prominent in Essex County Political Circles
Newburyport, Mass, Dec. 17 — Daniel H. Fowle, proprietor of the famous Wolfe Tavern here for the past 22 years, died early Wednesday morning from a general breakdown. He was one of the best hotel men in this state and had been conspicuous in Republican party politics in Essex county for a quarter of a century.
The Wolfe Tavern, which he conducted, is one of the historic hotels of the country and for years has been a mecca for autoists who toured the North Shore. Gen. Lafayette stopped there and made it his headquarters during part of the revolutionary war. Ex-President Taft, when he had the summer White House at Beverly, was fond of motoring over to the Wolfe to dine. Other celebrities by the score have yearly made trips to the old hostelry to inspect its colonial architecture and historic possessions.
Proprietor Fowle was the father of Eugene Fowle, who has represented Newburyport in the Legislature for several years past. He and his son were leaders of Congressman A.P. Gardner's political machine in this city."
