Floy Luella Jones, 101, passed away April 11, 2011, at the Sigourney Care Center.
Floy was born July 13, 1909, in Clearfield to Martha Grace Shafer and Harry Baker. She was raised in North Dakota and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1926. Two years later, while working at Northwest Telephone Company, she met Ralph E. Jones, who was a teacher in Carrington, N.D. Ralph later accepted a position in Grinnell, and on New Year's Day 1934 they were united in marriage in Grinnell.
After taking over operation of the Hedrick Journal in Hedrick, Floy and Ralph published th Hedrick Journal newspaper for 40 years. Floy also served as interim postmaster in 1957 and was a substitute postal clerk for 15 years. She was a member of the Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist Church, served on numerous committees and sang in the church choir for many years. She was a 50-year member of the Hedrick Order of Eastern Star and served as an officer for more than half of that time. Her love of the community was shown in many ways, but Floy's participation in the Hedrick Granny Cheerleadeers at Hedrick High School in the 1980s was the most enjoyable. The granny squad performed at local basketballl games, cheered the Hawkeyes in Iowa city and was interviewed on ABC's Good Morning America television show.
Floy was a faithful supporter of the community she called home for seven decades. Whether she was attending an athletic event with her husband, going fishing or hunting with her sons, checking out yard sales with her daughter Helen, making quilts for the grandchildren or working on a Hedrick Booster project Floy was indeed a remarkable woaman. She could be seen riding her bicycle around town until she moved to the Care Center in 2003. "Remarkable" describes her well.
Floy is survived by her two sons, Gary(Shirley)Jones of Ottumwa and Allen(Luanne)Jones of Batavia; her son-in-law, Vern Ball of Bloomfield; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; a daughter, Helen Jones Ball; an infant granddaughter, Debbie Diane Ball; a sister, Ruth Slusher; and two brothers, Clarence Baker and Glen Baker.
Memorials have been established to the Carl Craft Civic Center or the Hedrick Community Center. Visitation will begin after 2 pm today with family present from 5-7 pm and Eastern Star service at 6:30 pm at the Fremont Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday at the Fremont Funeral Chapel; Rev. Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery near Hedrick.
