Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died Nov. 25, 2008, at Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station at the age of 89.

Sr. Francis Maria was born in Union City, N.J., the daughter of Francis and Mary Ann (Connor) Cassidy. She entered the Sisters of Charity on Sept. 8, 1945, and was a member for 63 years.

Sr. Francis Maria was an educator in New Jersey. She served as a teacher at Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair, from 1946 to 1948, St. Michael's High School, Jersey City, from 1948 to 1952, Academy of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, from 1952 to 1979, and as an English professor at the College of St. Elizabeth/Farleigh Dickinson from 1979 to 1980. Sr. Francis Maria also served as an assistant in the Archives at St. Elizabeth Convent, Convent Station, from 1978 to 1989. She then served full-time in the Cause of Sister Miriam Teresa from 1990 to 2007, when she moved to Saint Anne Villa where she resided until her death.

Sr. Francis Maria was an internationally recognized playwright. Her play "Elizabeth of New York" based on the life of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the foundress of the Sisters of Charity, was performed in New Jersey, New York, New England and Maryland. Translated into Italian, it was set to music and performed in Livorno, Italy.

Predeceased by her parents, her brother, the Rev. Joseph L. Cassidy, and her sisters, Anne Cassidy Cliggett and Molly Cassidy Johnson, she is survived by her sister, Dorothy Myers of Holland, Ohio, as well as six Cliggett, three Johnson and three Myers nieces and nephews. She was also loved by 58 grandnieces and grandnephews.

The wake for Sr. Francis Maria will be held in Saint Anne Villa, Convent Station, N.J., from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 6 p.m. Burial will be on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in Holy Family Cemetery, Convent Station at 9 a.m.
