Halley Monroe James, 79-year-old Fortuna resident, died Thursday morning in a Scotia hospital following a brief illness.

He was born February 7, 1878, in Gold Hill, NV, and spent much of his youth in California. He later moved to Oregon, residing there 20 years before returning to California in 1930. He had lived in Fortuna since 1948.

James was a retired gold miner.

He leaves a son Clyde Willis Brewer of San Francisco; two granddaughters, Mrs. Donna Mae Merrari of San Francisco and Mrs. Doreen Rae Dillon of Harbor City; two great granddaughters, Alaris Desiree Dillon of Harbor City and Julie Ann Ferrari of San Francisco; a nephew, Pat James of Redding; brother, Lew James of Willits; aunts, Mrs. Lora Mundy and Mrs. Emma Lewis of Santa Rosa.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Ray Magnuson on Saturday, May 11, from the chapel of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary. Interment in the family plot at Rohnerville Masonic cemetery.
