John O. Shirk, 68, a ­Lancaster attorney and ­community leader, died of respiratory failure on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Presbyterian ­Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. A resident of Manheim Township, he was the son of the late John S. and Mary Osborne Shirk. He was ­married to Mary Ann ­Fasnacht Shirk for 44 years.

John received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and his law degree from the University of ­Pennsylvania. He was a 1961 graduate of Manheim Township High School.

He joined the law firm of Barley, Snyder, Senft and Cohen in 1969, becoming a partner in 1973 and serving as managing partner from 1983 to 1993. He served as general counsel for Franklin and ­Marshall College.

John was a trusted advisor to many corporations and community organizations. He currently was serving as a board member on the ­Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Pennsylvania ­College of Art & Design, ­Fulton Bank and Fulton Financial Corporation, Irex Corporation, Lancaster Newspapers and other ­Steinman Enterprises, Eastern Insurance Holdings Inc., and Pennfield Corporation. He was a former board ­member and past board ­president of Lancaster ­General Hospital and Lancaster General Corporation, the United Way of Lancaster County, and Economic ­Development Company of Lancaster County. He also had been on the board of EDC Finance ­Corporation of Lancaster County, a founding board member of Lancaster Alliance, and past board member of Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and ­Industry, Educators Mutual Life Insurance Co., and the Horst Group.

John, well known for his sense of humor, also was an accomplished outdoorsman. He could regularly be found fly fishing in Alaska, going on pack trips through Idaho, ­riding horses with his son and training hunting dogs. He also was a strong steward of the two family farms in ­Lancaster County.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his daughter, Caroline L. Shirk of New York City; a son, Mike Shirk and his spouse Andrea Shirk of Lancaster; a grandson, Tyler Shirk of Lancaster; a sister, Marolyn Davenport and her spouse Jim Wilson of Lancaster; a sister, Mary S. Blakinger and her spouse Chuck Blakinger of Bryn Mawr, PA; and a brother, Dr. Art O. Shirk and his spouse John Gatto of Malden, MA. He was preceded in death by a son, Artie Shirk.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to a Memorial Service celebrating John's Life at Barshinger Center at Franklin & ­Marshall College, 612 College Avenue, Lancaster, PA on Monday, November 14, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with The ­Reverend Randolph T. Riggs officiating. The family will receive friends at The Groffs Family Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 528 W. Orange Street (at the corner of Orange & Pine Sts.), on ­Sunday, November 13, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A ­private family interment will take place in The Shirk ­Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in John's name to The John O. Shirk ­Memorial Nursing Scholarship, Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health ­Sciences, for nursing ­students residing in Lancaster County, Attn: Development Office, 410 N.
