Born in Boston, Mr. Athanas lived in Somerville for the past 50 years. He formerly lived in the West End of Boston.
He served in the Navy during World War II as a seaman second class.
Mr. Athanas worked as a plant manager at the Boston Sausage Co. in Boston for 15 years. He retired in 1983.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 19 in Somerville.
Husband of the late Anna (Castiglione), Mr. Athanas is survived by a son, Louis G. of Boxford; a daughter, Karen of Somerville; and two sisters, Olga Rapo of Southbridge and Tefta Gilchrist of Chicago.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Dello Russo Funeral Home, Medford.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
