Mahlon was the 13th child of Levi Beach and Margaret Shaw.
In the winters he worked for the J R Booth Lumber Co of Ottawa, operating logging camps and river driving. The timber was carried by water all the way to Ottawa (some 400 miles) and manufactured into paper, lumber and railway ties. Mahlon gave this up after several years and concentrated on farming, having acquired 500 acres of land in all.
He was married to Jane Winifred Mayhew on 05 DEC 1900 in Ontario.
Together they had 8 children
