Revised 7-6-2017 (added obituary and sources).

Sources report that Nancy was born May 7, 1814 in Ohio, and that she was the daughter of ELIJAH STEPHEN and MARJORA DEARTH (see page 42, "Descendants of Captain John Baker", by Valerie Jean Kramer). This birth year does conflict with the 1818 year of birth on her headstone, but census records also suggest multiple possible birth years.

Records indicate that Nancy was married to Andrew Baker sometime in the mid 1830's (probably in Monroe County OH), and that the couple lived most of their adult lives in Seneca Ohio.

They were the parents of at least 14 children:

unidentified male Baker
1837 – ? (before 1850)
Lydia Baker
1839 –
Matilda Baker
1841 –
Elijah Baker
1843 –

Andrew Herman Baker
1860 – 1947
Julietta Baker
1860 –
Louiza J. Baker
1863 –
Eliza Jane Baker
1865-1890

Records suggest the family attended Mt Ephraim Methodist Church

They both died in 1899, and are buried at the Church cemetery.

OBITUARY (reportedly published in "Spirit of Democracy" Thursday May 11, 1899):

"Obituary Notice. With long life and His salvation did God bless Mrs. Nancy Baker, nee Stephen, who was born May 7, 1814, and died within three miles of Harriettsville April 25, 1899. In 1835 she was married to Andrew Baker who survives her though in his ninetieth year and in feeble health. Before performing the last sad rites for the mother and wife the solemn ordinance of Christian baptism was administered to the father and husband who was unable to be raised from his bed. Sister Baker was born of the Spirit and united with the M. E. church when young. She expressed to the writer her confidence in God and her readiness to depart to be with Christ. She leaves eight children to mourn the irreparable loss they now must bear. R.W.M."
