Son of Syl W. Houston, born Tennessee, and Evelyn Jackson, born Alabama. Married first to Lonie Hudson about 1917; their daughter Velma was born around October 1918.

Lonie died in 1927; Sam married second to Mrs. Mittie Garrison Futch on December 16, 1929 in Harris County, Texas. In the 1930 US Census for Harris County, Texas, Sam and Mittie are living with his daughter Velma, age 11 years, and Mittie's daughter Kathryn, age 9 years.

Sam's step-daughter Kathryn named her only son John Houston - most likely in honor of her step-father.

Mittie remarried after Sam died, but they share a double grave marker in the Palestine City Cemtery, New Addition Annex.

Sam was an insurance agent, 65 years old, married, and a resident of Palestine, Texas. Informant was Mittie Houston; burial was February 6, 1951. L. E. Foster was in charge of arrangements.
