HELEN JOSEPHINE SHUMATE
Helen Josephine Shumate, 74, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2007.
A native of Van, W.Va., Helen had been a resident of Hampton since 1975. She was a faithful member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Helen enjoyed the many years she served as a Bus Aid with the Hampton City School System. She loved to cook and took great pride in raising her family, she loved nothing more than spending time with her family.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald L. Shumate.
A dedicated mother and grandmother, she leaves to cherish her memory her children, Donald D. Shumate and his wife, Alice, of Newport News, Ronald R. Shumate and his wife, Cathy, of Yorktown, Darlia J. Kerr and her friend, Nancy Forbes of Smithfield, Traci K. Brylewski and husband, Joe, of Hampton, Terri L. Chambers and her husband, John, of Hampton and Dianna C. Shumate of Newport News; brothers, Hayden Crawford of Avon, Ohio, and James Crawford and his wife, Marylou, of Summerfield, Fla.; sister-in-law, Ethel Shumate of Morriston, Fla.; grandchildren, Ronald Jr., Kristie, Jeffery, Cassi, Rachael, Amy, Tara, Michael, Heather, Jessica, Kristian, Kaylea, Collin and Taylor, and 13 great-grandchildren. Special friends include Bonnie Chambers, Karen Alba and Joanne Sandford.
A service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Friends are encouraged to visit www.mem.com to share memories and words of comfort with the family.
