Viletta Amelia Hillery, 91, Macomb, died at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at The Elms Nursing Home, Macomb.

She was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Cambridge, the daughter of Fred Leroy and Lydia (Bowling) Hillery.

She is survived by one sister, Melissia (G. Earl) Bettisworth, Macomb; two nieces, Bettye (Wendell) Swanson, Macomb, and Janice (Charles) Brecht, Buffalo, N.Y.; two nephews, Leslie Garland Dowell Jr., Winnabow, N.C., and Walter Leroy Dowell, Hatboro, Pa.; four great-nieces; four great-nephews; four great-great-nieces; and two great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leigh Edward and Lester Hillery, one sister, Myrtle (Leslie) Dowell and one niece, Juanita (Henry) Kluever.

She graduated from Western Academy in 1932, Western Illinois State Teachers College with a two-year degree in 1937, Western Illinois State College with a B.S. in 1948, Western Illinois State College with an M.S. in 1953 and attended Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston.

She taught 36 years in Macomb Community Unit School District #185. She taught for two years at Roosevelt Elementary and 34 years at Logan Elementary School. In 1953, she became principal of Logan Elementary School, a position she was to hold until her retirement in 1978. Prior to this, she taught at two rural schools, West Railroad School in 1937 and Black School from 1938 to1939 and also taught at Tennessee Elementary School from 1940 to 1941.

She was a member of Kappa Delta Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, National Education Association, Illinois Education Association, McDonough County Retired Teachers Association and served on a variety of committees and as an officer. Following her retirement, she was active in the Logan Retired Teachers. She was a member of the General Macomb Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution and served as regent, librarian and historian. She was also a member of the Prairie Colony of New England Women and served as president and vice president.

A member of Wesley United Methodist Church, she has served in many ways; over 60 years as a church school teacher; over 40 years as the head teacher of the Kindergarten Department; was a member, President and Secretary for the Fellheimer Trust Committee; Conference, jurisdiction and national officer for Wesley Service Guild Committee and served as jurisdiction officer for United Methodist Women and Conference and District officer for United Methodist Women.

Within the Macomb community, she was a Girl Scout leader for the first Macomb senior high school troop and for several years was the camp director for Brownie Girl Scout Camp. She served on the Macomb Public Library Board for many years. In addition, she served on the Western Illinois Library System Board and was president for many years. She had also served on several committees for the Illinois State Library. In 1988, she was one of the grand marshals for the Macomb Heritage Days parade.

She lived most of her life in Macomb. To many people she was and always will be Miss Hillery, their principal, teacher, mentor and friend.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb, with the Rev. Russell Smith officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Feb 15, 2007, at the Atrium of Wesley United Methodist Church, Macomb.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date at the Clover Chapel Cemetery, Woodhull.

Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church Kindergarten Department, the Macomb Public Library or The Elms Nursing Home, Macomb.
