Augustus removed to Livonia soon after his marriage to Phebe and homesteaded there. They built up a good farm and prospered, but in 1841 Phebe died after giving birth to twins. Both twins died at birth and the mother was "buried with a child in either arm". Augustus and both his wives are buried in the Annis-Powell cemetery at Livonia. He was a member of the Universalist Church, and the Democratic party.
