--He was third of the 13 children of Rev. Thomas Battle & wife Mary "Polly" Baker. The family moved to Monroe County about 1821.
--1836 graduate of University of GA.
--1840 graduate of University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He practiced medicine for over 40 yrs., in Lumpkin, GA and later in Columbus.
--He married Ann Cherry Ball on September 4, 1849. They had 8 children: Mary Sophia, Green Ball, Laura A., Thomas W., Alice Flora, Charlton Eugene, Beulah, and Annie Lucille Battle. (3 more died in infancy)
