Hiram was the only child of James Allen and Malinda Bates. His mother died in 1832 when Hiram was two years old. His father married Margaret Philips in 1833 and together they had nine children.

Hiram married Nancy Maiden on 26 Aug 1952 in Lawrence County, Indiana, and they had five children: James, Martha, Mary, Rachel, and an infant daughter. The family moved from Indiana to Iowa between 1854 and 1857. Hiram's wife Nancy and youngest daughter died in 1860.

Hiram married Rebecca Ann Dickenson on 30 Sep 1865 in Madison County, Iowa. Hiram and Rebecca had two sons: Henry and Andrew.

Hiram was a veteran of the Civil War. Between his two marriages, Hiram enlisted as a Private on 21 Nov 1861 at the age of 31 years. He mustered into Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry on 5 Dec 1861. Hiram received a disability discharge from Co I on 10 Dec 1862 at Keokuk, Iowa.

James died from wounds suffered in the war at the age of 38 years 7 months.
