Anthony "Dave" Griffin was a member of Romeo Co., The Citadel class of 1974. Member, 1974 Junior Sword Drill. He served his country as a U. S. Navy SEAL, was a member of the U.S. Navy Parachute Demonstration Team ('Chuting Stars), and was a U.S. Navy Pilot. On July 29, 1982, Anthony David Griffin, (LT, USN), and his RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) Neal F. "Cookies" Carlock, (LT, USN) members of fighter squadron VF-101, had an in-flight emergency shortly after takeoff from NAS Oceana (Virginia Beach, Virginia) and ejected from a U. S. Navy Grumman F-14A Tomcat jet fighter (BUNO 161143) at a high rate of descent. Both men's parachutes streamed and neither survived. The VF-101 was U.S. Navy Fighter Squadron 101 (VF-101) known as "The Grim Reapers".

A Grumman F-14A-110-GR Tomcat -- #161143 (VF-101) crashed 7/29/1982 at Virginia Beach, VA shortly after takeoff from NAS Oceana. Both crew killed. Pilot LT Anthony David Griffin, (USN), and RIO LT Neal F. "Cookies" Carlock, (USN).

US NAVY VETERAN

While at The Citadel, Anthony D. "Dave" Griffin, Jr., won the Star of the West competition for the Best-Drilled Cadet in 1972. He was a member of The Citadel's two elite drill units, The Junior Sword Drill and The Summerall Guards. He was chosen by his peers to be the Commander of The Summerall Guards.

THE ANTHONY D. GRIFFIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP -- was initiated in 1983 as the result of contributions from classmates, family, and friends of Lieutenant Anthony D. Griffin. The fund is named in memory of Lieutenant Anthony D. Griffin, Citadel Class of 1974, who was killed in a naval aircraft crash. Scholarships are available to cadets with financial need who possess attributes in accord with the high standards of The Citadel and are members of the Summerall Guards or Junior Sword Drill Unit, preferably not the commander of either. The first award was made in 1986.
