A. F. Hardie was the son of John Hardie and Mary M. Hall. John Hardie was born in Scotland and was in the mercantile business in Alabama.

A. F. Hardie was a Civil War veteran. He moved to Dallas in 1875 and became a well-known prominent businessman. For more information see the obituary articles published in The Dallas Morning News on April 20 and 21, 1919.

He was an elder in the Presbyterian church fifty-two years and at the time of his death he was an officer in Westminister Presbyterian Church.
