SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Joan L. Andersen, 88, of South Sioux City passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at her residence after a two-and-a-half month illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Glad Tidings Lighthouse, with the Rev. Michael Ring, Rev. Stan Cook, Rev. Gerald Gunstanson and Rev. Ralph Rogers officiating. There will be a lunch following the service Friday in the church fellowship hall. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Cemetery, Walthill, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Joan was born May 4, 1922, in Walthill, Neb., the daughter of Alvin M. and Truth R. (Vassar) Ring.

She married Earl W. Andersen on March 23, 1939, in Elk Point, S.D. She was employed at St. Joseph Hospital, Andersen Truck Service, Woodbury County Action Agency, Salvation Army, Harris Janitors, Private Home Health Care and was a senior companion leader for the Center for Siouxland.

She was a member of Glad Tidings Lighthouse in South Sioux City.

Survivors include her sons, Marlow (Terry) Andersen of Phoenix, Ariz., Stanley Andersen and Keith Andersen and his companion, Patti Schmitz, all of Sioux City; five daughters, Earlene Stevenson and her companion, El Bottorff of South Sioux City, Roxanna (Gerald) Vanderpool of Spencer, Iowa, Trudy Gries and her companion, Jim Agostine of South Sioux City, Carla Whitehead of Sioux City, Karen (Dan) Harmon of Phoenix; two brothers, Stanley (Lucille) Ring of South Sioux City, Don (Mary) Ring of Walthill; a stepbrother, Rick Palmer of Sioux City; a sister, Oma (Ralph) Rogers of Dakota Dunes; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl on June 16, 1989, in Orange City, Iowa; a son, Bryon D. Andersen; two sisters, Connie Young and Lastava Ring; two grandsons, Shane Gries and J.R. Rosengartner; a great-grandson, Logan Gries; and four stepbrothers, Bob, Billy, Donnie and Tom Palmer.

Pallbearers will be Duane Rosengartner, Tenneil Gries, Jeffery Whitehead, Matt Vanderpool, Brandon and Travis Andersen. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Vanderpool, Joshua Lundahl, Seth Harmon and Truett Andersen.
