Charles Warren Butler was a son of Melvin Butler & his wife Ellen Rood, and records indicate he was born April 1, 1889, in Homer NY, where he lived his entire life.
In 1917, when he completed his WWI draft registration, Charles described himself as being medium height & build, with light blue eyes and dark brown hair.
Sources show he was a carpenter / laborer who also played on the local baseball team. All considered, it appears he was a regular guy, with a strong sense of family, who made both good & bad decisions, and who often found himself in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time. Local newspapers reported many of his adventures, ranging from stealing 3 geese with a buddy as a young man to single-handedly pulling a family of four from a burning car at age 43.
He married Mabel Irene Yorkey, probably on May 2, 1911.

In September 1932, the Homer Post reported that Charles had pulled a family of four from their burning vehicle after an automobile accident. The article stated, in part, "It didn't take Dutch long to see that the windows of the sedan were tight closed and that the occupants could not get out. Running to the burning automobile, he thrust his fist through the front window and kicked his feet through the back pane and lifted out Jacob Keledjian and his wife and two children. They were treated at the hospital and allowed to return to their home in Syracuse. Dutch suffered a lacerated hand...."
Charles died December 10, 1938, and is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Homer, NY. Reported cause of death was pneumonia, which family sources indicate was related to his having fallen on his way home one night, and being found later in a snow bank.
