In 1874 lived in Idaho Springs teaching school was Justice of the Peace for two years.
In December 1875, he moved to Georgetown and organized the first graded school.
He married Annette Howe in Denver on December 23, 1875. He was elected County Superintendent of Schools of Clear Creek County in 1877 until 1880. He then had an office in Idaho Springs and Georgetown doing an extensive and lucrative business as mining and civil engineer.
