"Howard L. Givens, 72 of Thornton, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at his home. He was born February 22, 1934 at Yellowpine, Alabama to the late Louella Givens and S.G. Givens.

"Howard was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and decorated veteran of the Korean War. After the service he moved to Roseburg, Oregon where he married Betty Golden and worked in a local plywood mill. In 1965 he moved to Arkansas to work for Georgia Pacific where he became Operations Manager over five mills in Arkansas and Louisiana. He retired in 1982 for health reasons but later went on to work as a security guard for Bearden Lumber Company. He was also a member of Providence Baptist Church.

"He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Floyd Givens, and a grandson, Donnie Givens.

"Survivors include his wife, Betty Givens of Thornton; two sons, James Givens and Dennis Givens both of Thornton; one daughter, Brenda Abner of Reno, Nevada ; two brothers, Ben Givens of Pensacola, Florida and Lonnie Givens of Orange, Texas; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

"Funeral Services will be Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 2 PM at the Benton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Calaway Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 PM until 8 PM at Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce. To sign the online register visit www.bentonfuneralhome.com ."
