The son of James Black and Christine Skoczyska, John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a staff sergeant when he received his discharge from the service.

John was the father of 3 children, and worked as a freight-line mechanic for McDonnell Douglas. He retired in 1969 after 30 years of service.

At the time of his death at Christian Hospital Northeast, John was 75 years, 5 months and 10 days old. He was survived by 2 daughters, (Living) Cozart of Plantation, Florida, and (Living) Hodges of Baltimore, Maryland; 1 sons, (Living) Black of Wood River, Illinois; and 1 brother, (Living) Black of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by 1 brother, James B. Black; and 3 half-brothers, Frank, Ervin and Eugene Paszalek.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on 30 Mar 2005 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where a prayer service also took place. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wood River.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to Masses.

Children: 2 daughters, 1 son.
