George Samuel Couch, 78, of Punxsutawney, entered God's Kingdom of Heaven on his heavenly train ride Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.

He was born Sept. 14, 1934, in Bell Township, Jefferson County, a son of the late George Wetley and Pearl Myrtle (Vasbinder) Couch.

George was the last member of his family.

Mr. Couch was a Staff Sargeant of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict.

On March 22, 1958, he married the former Mary Evelyn Stiver, who survives.

She was a devoted wife and caregiver, and they celebrated 54 years of marriage together.

Mr. Couch was a member of the St. Phillips United Methodist Church in Big Run for 54 years, where he taught Sunday School, Bible studies, was Sunday School Superintendant and was a Lay Leader, both past and present.

He also handcrafted many wood pieces that still adorn the church today.

George worked for S.W. Jack Drilling, did some construction, worked at Marhoeffer, and finally worked for T.W. Phillips Gas Company, from which he retired after 26 years.

He loved woodworking, being outdoors and hunting and fishing.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include two loving daughters, Lori J. Bouch and husband Sam of Mahaffey, and Lisa K. Keller and husband Rodney of Punxsutawney; four beautiful grandchildren, Rochelle M. Reitz, Tanner L. Reitz, Elizabeth M. Keller and Laura Ann Keller; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Couch; and two sisters, Louise Pearce and Ruby Abbott.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at St. Phillips United Methodist Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, officiated by Pastor Dawn Krishart.

Interment will be private at Bowers Cemetery.

The family requests no flowers, but memorial donations made in George's memory to St. Phillips United Methodist Church or DRMC Hospice.
