Joan F. George nee McMahon
8-2-1926 Anderson IN / 10-29-2002
Joan F. George, of St. Charles, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at Delnor Community Hospital. She was born on August 2, 1926 in Anderson, IN, the daughter of John and Mary McMahon Burggraf. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Anderson. After high school graduation, she attended St. Mary's College.
It was in her early years that Joan first showed her love of and talent for music. She studied piano and went on to become an accomplished pianist. She was also the church organist at St. Mary's Church in Anderson during high school.
After her mother's death, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for a time in civil service.
She returned to Indiana, and was united in marriage to Leroy E. George in May of 1949. They made their first home in Indianapolis, where they welcomed their first two children. Several years later, they moved their family to Batavia briefly, and later to St. Charles, and welcomed two more children.
With her children nearly grown, Joan returned to work. She was employed at Houghton Mifflin Company in Geneva in the accounting department for nineteen years.
Joan was an avid reader. As a child, her goal was to "read every book in the library." She enjoyed gardening, and was especially proud of her roses and her vegetable garden. She also enjoyed stamp collecting and spoiling her pets, Dilly, Dilly and Crissy.
Joan will be lovingly remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She often said that the thing in her lifetime that she was most proud of was her family.
She is survived by her children, Michael George, of Connecticut, Mary (James) Skaar of Geneva, Thomas (Debbie) George of Wheaton and Steph (Teri) George of Batavia, as well as her grandchildren, Kelsey and Nicholas George of Wheaton, and Laura Skaar of Geneva, to whom she passed on her love of reading and music.
Other survivors include her sister, Esther (James) George, of Anderson, IN; her brothers, Edward Burggraf of New York and Robert (Yoo-Nae) Burggraf of CA as well as several nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, Catharine Rector, her husband Leroy in 1984 and her sister, Katharine, in May 2002.
Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2002 at Yurs-Wittenburg Funeral Home, 1771 West State Street, Route 38, Geneva, IL. Rev Carl Beekman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Geneva, IL. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
