She was born in Beverly, daughter of James and Marie (McDonough) Kelliher.
A longtime resident of Wenham, Mrs. Birkemose had been employed for many years as a registered nurse at Beverly Hospital. She was a graduate of the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing and was an avid knitter and member of the Village Stitchery and Knitting Group.
Mrs. Birkemose was a longtime volunteer for the American Heart Association and the Visiting Nurse Association and was past chairwoman of the Hobbs House in Wenham.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Arnold of Marblehead; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Birkemose of South Hamilton; and four grandchildren, Patrick and Katie Birkemose, Allison Villani and Erik Arnold.
She was also the mother of the late Robert H. Birkemose Jr.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 22 at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, Union Street, Hamilton. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are by the Lee, Moody & Russell Funeral Home of Beverly.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the R.H. Birkemose Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Wenham Village Improvement Society, Wenham, MA 01984.
