[Tusola City and Township History] "Robert Fickle, farmer, was born Perry County, Ohio, October 5 1819. His father, Jonathan, a native of Virginia and a Revolutionary soldier, moved to Ohio with his parents. Robert Fiskle isthe eldest son in a family of thirteen children, In his younger days he assisted in the support of the family, and got hiseducation like all the rest -- by the light of the burning hickory bark and home study. He was reared to farming; began for himself in 1840, and voted for Harrison for President the same year. On March , 1842, he married Cynthia A Vanshayck, of Franklin County, Ohio. They had born to them three children, all living, married and prosperous. This wife died September September 1, 1852. His second wife is a sister to the first -- Perthena A Vanshayck. They have five children. Mr. Fickle came to Illinois in 1867, and after a year bought his present farm of 240 acres. He has made all the improvements, and stock-raising is his mode of farming. In the late war he served in Compaany H, One Hundred and Thirty-third Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and participated in many hard-fought battles. He is a Methodist, A Republican, a radical temperance man and voted for Salmon P Chase for Governor of Ohio. He has made every cent of his property by his own exertions."
