Johann Nicol Carl Morgenroth, son of Johann Georg Wolfgang Morgenroth and Johanne Regine Christiane Kappauf, was born in Grossbreitenbach, Thuringia, Germany. The Morgenroths were Ashkenazi Jews who belonged to the Lutheran Church in Germany for generations.. Charles as he was known in America, immigrated from Grossbreitenbach to the U.S. arriving at New York City on July 2, 1866, aboard the SS Bremen, via Bremen, Germany. His traveling companion was Johanna Kappauf, age 21, who was most likely his maternal cousin. He lived at 1302 Race Street, Philadelphia until about 1873, when after marrying Catharina Rosina Bauer in 1871 or 72, they went to Genoa Village, Ottawa County, Ohio, near Toledo. There his first four children were born. In 1885, they returned to Philadelphia, where in 1887, their fifth and final child was born. They lived in Northeast Philadelphia on Emerald, Venango and Kensington Avenue over the years until his death in 1903. He died at 3617 Kensington Avenue. During his working life he was a bottler, glazier, and shoemaker.

He was laid to rest in an unmarked grave, until a fine monument was erected many years later to honor him and his descendants.
