WEST FRANKFORT, ILL (BP)--Oscar Dillon, who dies here on May 30, 1976.
The 83-year-old bachelor lived frugally, never owning a car or a home, But with careful investments and inexpensive living resulted in the fulfillment of one of his dreams -- benefit to Baptist causes.
The single largest gift, according to James H. Smith, executive secretary of the Illinois Baptist State Association will go to the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, Richmond, Va., which has some 2,700 missionaries in 84 countries.
Smith, who was named executor of the estate, said that the Illinois Baptist State Association also would receive a significant endowment for mission work within the State of Illinois.
First Baptist Church, West Frankfort, ILL., where Dillon had a perfect 43-year attendance record where he taught Sunday School to the youth and later adults, as well as Parrish Missionary Baptist Church, located two miles west of Thompsonville, Ill., in the rural community where he grew up would also receive an endowment.
He was baptized at the Ewing (Ill.) Baptist Church on February 23, 1913, while a student at Ewing College, a school formerly operated by Illinois Baptists. For many years, he was a bookkeeper and auditor for the Old Ben Coal Corporation.
He proudly served his nation during World War I. He also relocated during the 1930's, working for awhile in Glen Rogers, West Virginia.
"He was a very loyal, precise person, even to his daily schedule" according to the First Baptist Church secretary. She also said that "you could sit your watch by him. He had a certain time each day to go to the post office and grocery store, and to pick up the Chicago Daily News and a St. Louis paper. If you wanted to know what was going on in the world, you could ask Oscar Dillon."
He was laid to rest at East Fork Baptist Church Cemetery east of West Frankfort, Ill. On his tombstone is written: HE LOVED GOD. This is apparent as his legacy and the impact that he has had on the Kingdom of Christ are far more his reward!
