OK is one of the youngest of the commonwealths of the Union and yet its age is sufficient to have enabled it to claim as representative figures in its business and professional ranks not a few ambitious young men who have been reared and educated within its borders. Such an one is Doctor Dawson, who is the only physician and surgeon engaged in practice at Wayne, McClain Co., and who has gained secure prestige as one of the able and successful representatives of his profession in this section of the state.
Dr. Dawson is of staunch Scotch ancestry and the family was founded in America in the colonial era of our national history. His grandfather, Thomas Benoni Dawson, born in VA, in 1804, was a gallant soldier in the Mexican war, an Iowa pioneer farmer and stock-grower and died in 1905, at the age of 100, in Long Beach, CA.
Dr. Dawson, born near Sherman, TX, 20 March 1884*, has been a resident of OK since he was a lad of about eight years.
He was the son of Wm., born in 1840, in IA, and Lucretia (Moorman) Dawson, born in OH, in 1845. Wm. was reared in the Hawkeye State. After his marriage he moved to NE, later resided for a time in KS, and in 1881 he removed with his family to Grayson Co.,TX, near Sherman, where he remained until 1892, when he came to OK Territory and established his residence at Guthrie. Since 1906 he has maintained his home in the vicinity of Wanette, Pottawatomie Co., where he is a prosperous agriculturist and stock raiser. He is a republican and a veteran of the Civil war, Iowa regiment of volunteer infantry. He and his wife are numbered among the sterling pioneer citizens of OK. Of their children Doctor Dawson is the youngest; Thomas B., a farmer near Wanette; OIlie, deceased, was wife of John Williams, who farms near Wanette: Wm. W. is agriculturist of the same locality; Charles T. lumber business, Luther, OK; LeRoy a farmer near Wanette; Lucy is wife of Wm Van Meter, a farmer near Guthrie; and John is agriculturist of Pottawatomie Co.
The rudimentary education of Doctor Dawson was acquired in TX and continued his studies in the public schools of the City of Guthrie and graduated in 1906. For a year he was a buyer of cotton and then entered medical studies at the University of Oklahoma, in Norman, graduating in 1912 with a degree of Doctor of Medicine.
He established his residence at Wayne, where he has continued active general practice and gained esteem and standing as a progressive and public-spirited citizen. The doctor is a member of the OK State Medical Society and the McClain Co. Medical Society; Beta Theta Pi and Phi Beta Pi; Wayne IOOF Lodge; Republican party.
