Gertrude Freudenberg (1864-1940) Schoenwald (b. September 27, 1864?; Germany - d. July 27, 1940; Brooklyn, Kings County, New York City, New York, USA)

Parents:
Siegmund Freudenberg (1828-1908) and Augusta Hermann (1835-1904).

Birth:
She was never consistent in the year that she was born. She was born on September 27, 1867 in New York City, New York according to her petition for naturalization. Her tombstone uses September 27, 1863. The 1870 United States Census uses 1861 and says that she was born in Germany. The 1880 United States Census uses 1862 and says the she was born in Pennsylvania. The 1900 United States Census uses September 1863 and says that she was born in New York. She couldn't be born in 1863 because she has a sibling born on 9 July 1863. 1867 appears wrong too, she arrived in the United States on 11 May 1869 without her father and mother. Her mother is assumed to have died around the time Gertrude was born. Gertrude has a half-sibling born on 27 October 1868 in Manhattan. Her father had arrived on 16 March 1867 and remarried in the United States.

Marriage:
She married Martin Schoenwald (1866-1941) on March 1, 1894 in Manhattan in New York City. Her certificate number was "2721". Because he was not a United States citizen at the time of the marriage she lost her United States citizenship under the Expatriation Act of 1907.

Children:
Jerome Monroe Schoenwald (1895-?) who married Gladys X (1900-1976); and Ralph Clarence Schoenwald (1897-1951) who married Shirley Schwartz (1905-2004).

Naturalization:
She applied for naturalization on January 1, 1920. She lost her United States citizenship under the Expatriation Act of 1907 because of her September 27, 1867 marriage to Jerome Monroe Schoenwald, who at the the time of the marriage was not a United States citizen. The Act stripped an American woman who married an alien of her citizenship and forced her to take on her husband's nationality or she would become stateless. Gertrude needed to be declared a United States citizen in 1920 in order to vote.

Death:
She died as "Gertrude Schoenwald" on July 27, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York at age 78. The certificate number was "15493". She would be born in 1862 or 1863 if she was 78 in 1940.

Burial:
Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Her tombstone uses the year 1863. She is in Cemetery #1; Post 76; Row 1.

Widower:
Her husband died on July 23, 1941 and his death certificate was "14990".

Relationship:
Gertrude Freudenberg was the second great aunt of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ).

Research:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on July 6, 2011. Updated on July 7, 2014 with her mother as Augusta Hermann (1835-1904) based on her year of birth. Updated on January 5, 2020 with information on the Expatriation Act of 1907. Updated on November 16, 2022 showing the ambiguity in her birth year.
