Nancy Hieronymus Davis Duff was born July 9, 1829 in Madison County, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Samuel Rector Hieronymus (1786 – 1866) and Sally (White) Hieronymus (1809 – 1871).
Nancy married first, Charles E. Davis, in Owsley County,Kentucky, May 14, 1846 at her father's home by Samuel P. Chandler, a Gospel Preacher. Samuel P. Chandler was Nancy's uncle who was married to her aunt, Nancy (White) Chandler.
Nancy and Charles had seven children:
James Samuel (1847-1904),
Charles Edward (1849 -1943),
Orlando Homer (1851-1939),
George F.C. (1852-?),
Alonzo Burse (1855 -1917),
Thomas Hill (1858 -1953)
Nancy Florence (Tutt) (1860 -1901).
Charles was a Corporal in Company D, 6th Kentucky Cavalry,Union, during the Civil War. He was captured after the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia and taken to a prison camp, probably in Richmond, Virginia. Sometime after the Andersonville, Georgia prison camp opened he was transferred there, where he died of Scurvy June 17, 1863.
Nancy married second, Claiborne A. Duff on January 20, 1869. Again by her uncle, Samuel P. Chandler, in Breathitt County, Kentucky.
Nancy and Claiborne had one child; Creed Duff.
Claiborne Duff died September 6, 1888 in a well from the fumes of dynamite smoke in Breathitt County, Kentucky.
Nancy Hieronymus Davis Duff died May 8, 1908 in Lee County, Kentucky.
Her grave marker was erected by her descendants in 1984.
