Officer Jago was one of hundreds aboard the S.S. Laurentic who died after it struck two mines laid by a German submarine. The ship, carrying 5 million pounds of gold bound to pay the United States for war munitions, sank off the coast of Ireland as it sailed around Malin Head.

The son of Samuel and Maria Way Jago, his siblings included Maud (died in childbirth), Catherine Mercy, Minnie, and Edith Annie.

Jago was survived by his wife, Eliza Alice, and two daughters, Esme and Edna.
