Victim Never Bitter Despite Tribulations
One close friend of Evelyn Sveska remembers her best as a woman who bragged about her sns and grandchildren, complimenting their talents and personalities.
"That is how I got to know her, really. When you find another person who is proud of her children and grandchildren and likes to talk about them all the time, you become close," said Lily Lafayette, a three year friend of Sveska.
Svestka, 62, died on November 27, allegedly the victim of a brutal beating inflicted by her 27-year old son, Kristopher.
"She loved all her sons, but especially the youngest one Kristopher, because he was her baby," said June Kern, a friend for 20 years.
Lafayette recalls Sveska as a person who loved to have fun and who sang with a beautiful voice.
But she also labored in physical agony from spinal deterioration, and walked with difficulty using canes.
"She had a lot of struggles. And this happened just when things looked like they were improving for her," said the Reverend Douglas Mercer, pastor of the United Methodist Church, of which Sveska was a member for 48 years.
Mercer said Sveska never expressed to him anxiety over the behavior of any of her sons.
"She had a really strong belief in God," he said. "And despite her personal pain, she never expressed bitterness."
Born in South Lyon May 14, 1923, Mrs. Sveska was the daughter of Clare and Christie (Pollock) Bradley.
She was a children's choir director at one time for the United Methodist Church. In the 1960s and 1970s, she worked for the South Lyon Housing Commission.
Survivors include three sons, Kevin J. of South Lyon, Kim J. of Milford and Kris of South Lyon; three sisters, Mrs. Gilbert (Mary Jane) Stone of Belmont; Mrs. Charles (Angelica) Wilson of Plainwell and Mrs. James (Jo Ann) Bridson of Plymouth; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Sveska was preceded in death by her husband James in 1981. December 4, 1985, South Lyon Times
