Daniel served as a private with the 202nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company F (Civil War).

Daniel was born in Chestnut Hill, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, to Philip & Magdalena Dotterer. He served in Civil War and returned to Pennsylvania where he was a carpenter. He married Mary Sax in 1864 in White Haven, Pennsylvania. About 1880 most of the family including some adult children moved to Wisconsin.

They had the following children:

William Dutter Sr
Edward David Dutter
Alice May Dutter
Thomas Beach Dutter
Amelia Sarah Dutter
Sarah (Sadie) Dutter
