Thanks for photos Esther M Kennedy
Thanks so much for the photo of Esther M Kennedy's gravestone and cemetery. As it turns out this is not the Esther M Kennedy I was looking for but it did rule her out. My Esther Kennedy was born in 1914. Thanks so much for what you do. Hopefully someone will be looking for this Esther Kennedy and will find these nice clear photo for their records.

Thank you for the extra time and effort to clean and photo the stone so that the name and dates can be read. Your help is greatly appreciated. Can you please post a copy the tombstone photo on her memorial - it is now only on Charles Telford's memorial. Thanks.

Mary Ann Wait's grave

Thank you so much Dorothy for taking the photo of my great auntís Mary Ann Waitís (nee Langdon) grave. I never knew her but have letters she wrote to her cousin who was managing a gold mine in Australia. Mary was a farmerís daughter and the eldest of 9 children. She was born in Cornwall. The family moved up to Wiltshire in 1896 to the village where I was born. In October 1899, she wrote a desperate letter to her cousin who was managing a gold mine in Australia, ďI know perfectly well it is no use to expect all sunshine anywhere but for a long time here it has been all clouds.Ē She blamed her father for her misery and asked about the possibility of joining her cousin in Australia. He replied offering to marry her. She declined saying she is in love with someone else but her father disapproved of him. I do not know who she was in love with but in January 1907 she brought an action for breach of promise against the only other farmer in the small village. He farmed the farm where I was born.

The case aroused great interested among the public and the court was crowded because shortly before a bill had been introduced in Parliament for the abolition of such actions. It was settled out of court minutes before the hearing. Mary received £500. Soon after she emigrated to Santa Barbara (as stated in the 1930 US census). An Ellis Island record shows that she arrived at the island on 4th July 1907 on the ship Majestic.

Mary stayed in the US until about 1911 and then returned for a while acting as a housekeeper for her brothers. She finally emigrated shortly before 1930 when the US census has her living alone in Santa Barbara and working as an accountant in a department store. Mary married James Wait in Santa Barbara in 1933. They never had any children (she was 59 when they married). James Wait is listed in Santa Barbara in the US 1930 census living with his wife Eunice H Wait, both aged 63. Family rumour has it that there was some scandal surrounding Mary, such as she was living in sin but maybe the scandal was that she was having an affair with a married man. Her youngest brotherís children remember her as a generous aunt who sent them exciting Christmas presents and food parcels, one of which contained prunes.

Best wishes,
Elise (Langdon-Neuner) Vienna, Austria

Thank you so much for looking for her. It's a bummer she doesn't have a headstone, but now we know!
