Retired MSG US Army. Got the genealogy bug in 2010 after my eldest brother passed away. A huge gap of unknown Wood ancestors was my primary obstacle to surmount. Was fortunate enough to trace the Wood line back to the late 1700's in Erie Co., N.Y. beginning with Great (x 4) Grandfather John Wood and his wife Huldah Pierce Wood who had at least ten children. Their son Augustus B. Wood and his wife Louisa Perry Wood had nine children. I have been able to trace all nine of them, their son Francis Burton Wood is my (direct line) Great-Great Grandfather. Francis' son John Perry Wood is my Great Grandfather and his son Frank McKinley Wood my grandfather.
Had a good start with my mom's family (Gardner) and have been able to take it from there thanks to the assistance of so many great people within the FindAGrave community. The four primary families I research are Wood, Gardner, Gentry, and Clare. Also researching additional ancestorial lines from the families of Rew, Braman/Brayman, Crockett, DeWitt, Slaven, Perry, Mecham, Pierce, Allen, McCumber, Merkel, Cox, Delong, Jennings, Hartless, Henry, Cormany, Lieberman, Gastineau, Dotson, Wilson, Patrick, Eastman, Hopson, Jarvis, and Lawson.
As far as transfers go I am happy to transfer any memorial that is not in my family tree. I am not overly concerned with only 4 generations or specific relations. Find a Grave has evolved over time and will continue to do so. Until or if ever they come to the realization that these memorials belong to everyone then I will do as I feel necessary to assist those in need of making connections with ancestors. As for photos, use them to your hearts content with all my blessing.
Additionally, if you submit an update on the memorial you are virtually assured of approval. 99% of all submissions are approved. Please don't submit changes to remove a period after the middle initial.
I don't care if your submission is based off the headstone or some other source. I've come across too many people who are uncompromising and rigid when it comes to memorial updates. I have chosen to be as flexible and supportive as possible.
I've had the unfortunate experience of at least one person with a negative attitude. No names mentioned, they know who they are. You want to do your own research, fine. I try to employ the golden rule whenever possible. Rudeness won't be tolerated. In today's ever evolving societal norms it seems another aspect of political ideology has wormed its way into genealogy. Specifically, gender identity. Recently, I've had the displeasure of being declined on obvious gender submissions for memorials of people long deceased. If you're one of those people who support the feelings over facts group that is your choice. However, imposing that ideology on the past is not only ridiculous but dangerous in my opinion. Obscuring truth and facts over emotional concerns will not be indulged with memorials under my care. End of subject!
