I used to volunteer for Find a Grave for years, but health has now forced me to the sidelines..It was fun while it lasted but I am now through...

I am a 2nd Generation native Southern Californian. I was born in Glendale CA in 1940. I am a US Navy Cold war era veteran. Spending four years aboard USS Inflict, a 170 foot long, 700 ton wooden-hulled minesweeper as an electrician's mate. Home ported at the now demolished, and never to return-(thanks Bubba & Hildabeast Clinton) Long Beach Naval Station CA. I retired in October of 1996, after 32 years of shift work in steam generation electric power plant operations for SO CA Edison. I am staying retired, not gainfully employed and LOVE every second of NOT working.

I have a Canon SX50-IS digital camera and a smaller SX20-IS which I use viz a viz taking grave marker photos, civil war re-enacting, living history events, and the various trips that I take, including geneology. I also use (since 1994) the most innovative and easiest computer on the planet, an Apple Intel iMac.

I am Past Commander of Generals Sedgwick-Granger Camp 17, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, in Santa Ana-Tustin CA. Now I am a member of General W. S. Rosecrans Camp 2 Los Angeles CA.

I had kin who fought on both sides in the War of the Rebellion. Most all of my direct linked ancestors came from western-middle Tennessee and near Elm Springs, (Bentonville) Arkansas. Great, great grandfather Junius was in 2nd AR Cavalry, Company F, Union Army, as were his two sons, John and Nicholas. The other three brothers, Rufus, Lucius "Gus", and James Farrar were in the Tennessee, Confederate States Infantry.

I am also Past Cmdr of Sons of Confederate Veterans of the Civil War, Capt. Cameron E. Thom Camp 2007, Long Beach CA. Junius' brother Pvt. Rufus Farrar was with the 2nd TN Confederate infantry, company D, and was killed at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862, near the log cabin church. Junius' other brother Lucius was wounded at Stones River TN on Dec 31st 1862, and according to his muster documents was "left on the battlefield for mercy of the enemy." In reading about that battle when I visited there Aug. 12, 2009, it was so cold that wounded left on the field were subjected to bitter cold. In fact most had their bloody uniforms freeze to the ground around the wound site. Uncle Lucius was captured, paroled, somewhat healed, and returned to his unit although not 100 percent fit for duty in a line unit. His hospital company was assigned around the Atlanta area and he was subsequently captured AGAIN this time by Sherman's troops on July 20th, of 1864 and spent the rest of the war at Camp Chase POW camp.

I have been into genealogy off and on for a number of years and recently discovered more info on my mother's side that I will publish later.
