I visit cemeteries mainly in my locality [within a 60-100 mile radius of Darlington, County Durham] and add photographs of war graves to existing memorial pages as well as adding previously unrecorded memorials and cemeteries. At the same time, I am adding any civilian headstones that catch my eye, especially if they also commemorate relatives that died overseas in the service of their country.

From JUNE 1969 England and Wales registrations of death usually state the date of birth, but this may not be accurate – depending on the informant's knowledge of the deceased.

Unless the countries of birth and death differ, please do not suggest "England" (without at least the present county or at the time of birth/death) for my memorials in English burial grounds.

Who is a "veteran" in the UK?
Veterans are defined as anyone who has served for at least one day in His/Her Majesty's Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or Merchant Mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations. Many former Armed Forces personnel in the UK do not define themselves as "veterans".
The term "veteran" is used to represent all former Armed Forces personnel. UK war dead are not defined as veterans. That includes US nationals that died in the service of the British Crown and are recognised as war dead by the CWGC.
